I mean, some engagements may be more enjoyable or exciting than are others, but if the final intent is achieved, can there actually be such a thing as "bad sex"?

Yes, when its just one sided. Bad sex is specially worse when the final intent is never achieved. It also can be bad if someone is into something (oral sex as just 1 example) and partner is not. Some women need foreplay to reach desired end and if they do not get it then "you guessed it" bad sex.
